MSA Select – Indoor Exhibition

Overview
MSA is partnering with the City of Lexington’s Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center to present a juried exhibition of work by MSA professional members. This exhibit seeks to foster MSA’s mission to advance the creation and awareness of sculpture in its many and varied forms and promote a supportive environment for sculpture and sculptors. The Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center is an arts and entertainment center located in the heart of Lexington. The Center offers high-quality theater, dance, music, visual and new media arts.

Artist Eligibility
This opportunity is open to all professional visual artists, aged 18 and older, who are current or new professional members of MSA. Each applicant may enter up to THREE works; all entries must have been conceived and created by the artist submitting the work; all media suitable for indoor exhibition will be considered. Applying for membership can be made when submitting for this exhibition.

Site
The Pam Miller
Downtown Arts Center is a multi faceated event space featuring two galleries. The City Gallery will host the MSA Select exhibition.

Installation
All accepted artwork should either be shipped or hand delivered to the City Gallery at the Pam Miller Downtown Art Center, 141 E Main St, Lexington, Kentucky, no later than October 7.

Artwork Scale
The gallery has a double door that can be removed allowing for works as big as 10’ to 12’ in one direction. Wall mounted works and light weight suspension works are permisable. Works over 300lbs may require the artist to participate in installation and de-installation but will be decided by the installation team.

Artist Responsibilities
MSA will supply power and assistance for your installation. The artist will provide hardware needed. 
Artists selected to exhibit their artwork will be responsible for:

· Transportation or shipping of artwork to and from the gallery

· Appropriate installation hardware if needed

Notification: Both selected and rejected artists will be notified of their selection by e-mail.


Juror
Melanie VanHouten is the founder and artistic director of Josephine Sculpture Park (JSP) in Frankfort, Ky. She received an Master of Fine Arts in studio art from the University of Minnesota in 2002 and Bachelor of Fine Art in studio art from the University of Kentucky in 1998. Melanie has taught all levels of sculpture and exhibited her work internationally.

She is an interdisciplinary artist combining sculptural processes and methods with contemporary approaches through site specific installations, community events and large earthworks. Her sculpture has been exhibited internationally at venues including the Minnesota Museum of American Art, Phipps Center for Art, Wis., Franconia Sculpture Park, Minn., and the Coalbrookdale Historic Site, Telford, England.

Melanie returned to her hometown of Frankfort, Ky. in 2008 to begin building Josephine Sculpture Park, a 26-acre park that operates as a nonprofit arts organization and provides unique, daily opportunities for the public to interact with artwork and the artists who create it. JSP provides community arts education while conserving Kentucky’s native, rural landscape. As founder and artistic director, she manages exhibitions, programming, fundraising, events and advertising for JSP. It is free and open 365 days per year from dawn until dusk. 

Application Requirements

  1. Images of up to 3 recent works. If necessary, please include additional detail shots of work submitted. Each image must be:

·      Saved in jpeg format

·      Set color to RGB

·      Image size should not exceed horizontal pixel dimension of 1920 pixels or vertical pixel dimension of 1080 pixels

·      Saved as artist’s last name and image’s title. Example: DOE_UNTITLED.jpg

  1. A complete list of images. For each image, include:
    • Title
    • Medium
    • Dimensions
    • Weight of sculpture
    • Hanging hardware if needed
  1. Short Artist statement or bio (150 words max)
  2. Completed entry form
