 Workshop #1

From Fibers to Forms
with instructor Sally Garner
Friday, October 2nd at 11:30am - 1:30pm

This workshop will thoroughly investigate the three-dimensional potential of handmade paper and paper pulp. Through hands-on experimentation, you will come to understand the natural delicacy, resilience, texture, and organic qualities of natural paper fibers. Working directly with wire, reed, and found objects, you will build simple armatures as foundations for dipping and pouring pulp, as well as stretching 3D-formed sheets. You will also learn about paper casting methods and will leave with practical strategies for continuing this work in your own studios with minimal tools and equipment.

 Workshop #2

From Shape to Structure: Modular Geometry and Collective Form
with instructor Dick Esterle
Friday, October 2nd at 1:30pm - 4:30pm

This workshop features “Space Chips,” Dick Esterle’s unique modular system of die-cut components made from recycled materials such as cardboard, cereal boxes, and other paperboard packaging. Participants will examine the geometric principles that underlie three-dimensional form, using triangles, squares, pentagons, hexagons, and rhombi to construct a series of spatial models.

The workshop will begin with the five Platonic solids and expand into more complex configurations, including the rhombic dodecahedron and rhombic triacontahedron. Spherical and axial counterparts will also be presented as additional frameworks for understanding structure, pattern, and spatial organization.

The final portion of the workshop will shift from guided geometric assembly to collaborative sculptural development. Using the Space Chips system, participants will test form, connection, repetition, and scale while considering how humble recycled materials can serve as tools for structural inquiry, material experimentation, and sculptural thinking.

Please email MSA Administrative Assistant Chelsea Moulder with any questions or if you need to bundle your workshop registration and Confab registration into one invoice.
